A bit about me: I’m very pleased and honored to present a selection of my photographs for viewing in the Mary Jo Rines Virtual Gallery! I have been photographing for more than 30 years now, mostly based around my travels to interesting destinations near and far, including National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, and famous places. My approach is to get "out there" at the right time, for the best light, the best mood, and then look for photographic opportunities that present themselves. I strive to capture in my images the spirit and beauty of each location.

My travel adventures offer unique moments that create a mood and feeling, and etch a memory in my mind. It’s my hope for everyone seeing my images to be inspired to pursue their own adventures or, if that is not possible, to enjoy my photographic interpretation of these magical moments and places.

My goal is to create images that evoke emotion and capture the spirit and the beauty of the world. I strive to find the best quality light and the most vibrant color within a compelling composition. Please follow me on this journey as I explore the many wonders and the beauty of nature around us.

Katharine’s Bio and Background: I love the beauty and spirit of our country and the extraordinary variety of landscapes, creatures and historical places. My husband and I travel to many different locations so I can capture this beauty and share it with others through my photographs. I try to create images that capture a sense of place, time, light, and feeling. My passion for photography started when I was young, but has grown over the years as technology has improved and my skills have advanced.

I have furthered my knowledge by taking classes at New England School of Photography in Boston; by attending photography lectures and workshops throughout New England, both in the field and in classroom settings; and by taking webinar seminars. In the past few years, I have expanded my passion for photography to wildlife and birding. This has opened up a whole new world of adventure and new photographic techniques to master. My Canon camera equipment has continually evolved.  Utilizing today's extraordinary technology, I have recently changed over to a mirrorless camera system consisting of the Canon R5 together with the RF 100-500 mm and the RF 24-105 mm lenses.

I have lived most of my life in New England and am a longtime resident of Weston. My background is as a Registered Nurse and a long time fitness instructor for the Weston Recreation Department and for the Weston Council on Aging. I also spent 10 years learning skills and techniques as a watercolor artist, but now I am fully focused on photography and shooting landscape, nature and wildlife photography.

My photography has been published in:  Oprah Magazine, New England Photography Guild website and blog, The Boston Magazine, Leukemia Lymphoma Society Man & Woman of the Year, Weston Recreation Department Fall Program Brochure,  Thomson Safari Travel  Catalog, Thomson Kilimanjaro Travel Catalog, and exhibited in various local  juried photography shows. For a number of years I also had the pleasure of photographing The Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night event, which is the primary LLS New England Chapter fundraising walk in Boston.

Scenics: Sunrise, Sunset, Fog…

For me, sunrise is a fresh beginning, a new start that brings the beauty of the waking day no matter where you are. Sunset offers a quiet peacefulness before the day is done; sometimes it's the splendor and a time to reflect on special moments. It's when the sun says goodnight until tomorrow. There are uniqueness and pleasant surprises with the color and intensity of each sunrise and sunset. And with the fog comes a special silence, a certain mood not found in other settings. These are times to sit and wonder and appreciate nature's special moments.

Favorite Places…

I find that I am drawn to historical locations and iconic landscapes.  I like to explore and photograph whatever inspires me at that time.  I seek out places close to home in New England as well as in distant parts of our country.  Discovering, and then incorporating the right light, color, and composition into an image is my goal.  Occasionally, however, certain images are more powerful and dramatic when presented in Black-and-White. They have a beauty of their own. I’ve included a few examples for you to see.

Nature: Wildlife and Birding…

As my photography has evolved so has my interest in birds and wildlife.  Many opportunities have presented as I have explored other areas of our beautiful country.  Mostly I like to include the particular habitat surrounding the wildlife, which makes the image come alive for me.  I also try to capture specific behaviors of the animal or bird, as in during a hunt, caring for their offspring, or rituals during migration and mating season.

Abstracts…

Occasionally, I step out of my comfort zone to stretch my creativity.  I find a natural subject and let Mother Nature help me develop an abstract image.  Anyone can interpret these images in their own way.
