We asked Lynda if she would introduce herself and share a bit about her work and creative process, and here is what she wrote…

A bit about me: My major medium is monotypes, one-of-a-kind works on paper, and I use an etching press to create them. I also create monoprints and mixed-media works.

My work is informed by nature and my fascination with it. I start with a feeling or idea, then think about how I will interpret that idea or feeling into a monotype, monoprint, or mixed media piece. Every piece is unique and the result of an adventure.

I use natural and manmade objects in creating my monotypes - leaves, grasses, ferns, seaweed, eggshells, metal objects, meshes, string, yarn, and other items. A work can be realistic, abstract, or a combination. I choose and use materials based on their appearance, feel, texture,… what they can do on a piece of paper and when they’re compressed by the weight of the press rollers.

I have also been cutting different shapes and patterns into linoleum; and experimenting with different color combinations, patterns, layering and spacial relationships.

When I’m printing it is the unlimited possibilities and the uncertainty of what exactly will appear, as well as the print being the reverse of what I was working on, that makes the monotype/monoprint process so exciting. My goal is to transmit my enthusiasm for the printmaking process and its creativeness to others.

Welcome to the Mary Jo Rines Virtual Gallery: We’re delighted to welcome printmaker Lynda Goldberg, along with you our viewers, to the Rines online gallery. This Spring exhibit celebrates the joy and wonder of the natural world, featuring Lynda’s monotypes (one of a kind works on paper), monoprints, and mixed media works that convey her personal connection to nature and provide a unique lens through which to ponder the infinite creative possibilities in our surroundings.

Lynda works “with curiosity and a sense of adventure”, which is no surprise considering her meticulous process and the wide range of materials she uses. In her words, “I use natural and manmade objects in creating my monotypes—leaves, grasses, ferns, seaweed, eggshells, metal objects, meshes, string, yarn, and other items. A work can be realistic, abstract, or a combination. I choose and use materials based on their appearance, feel, texture…namely, what they can do on a piece of paper when compressed by the weight of the press rollers. Each piece turns out unique and is the result of an adventure!”

An award-winning artist and resident of Newton, MA, Lynda is a member of the Monotype Guild of New England (MGNE), the Nature Printing Society (NPS), Unbound Visual Arts (UVA), and the Newton (NAA), North Shore (NSAA), and Rockport (RAA) Art Associations.

When not in her print studio, Lynda is likely relaxing up on Cape Ann, or out kayaking. Her work in this exhibit is for sale, and we invite you to view her price list (see link above left), and send any inquiries to Lynda directly: 617-610-3943, or to Larry Grob: 617-817-3123 or lagrob@mac.com.

Monotypes…

Monotypes are one-of-a-kind prints whose image has been transferred from a smooth plate (plexiglass, or a different substrate) to a piece of paper (or cloth, canvas, etc.) using pressure. I use plexiglass plates and an etching press.

An Etching Press usually has two steel rollers, one above and one below a hard base, known as a press bed. I place my plexiglass plate on the “press bed”, put a damp piece of paper on top (with newsprint and “blankets” on top of that) and run it through the press. The pressure from the weight of the steel rollers transfers the ink that was on the plexiglass plate and other elements onto the damp paper.

Monoprints…

Monoprints are also unique prints that are created from a plate that may have an image, scratch…fixed on it; or contain an element that can be repeated (stencil, stamp…). In short, Monoprints are unique prints, some part of which can be repeated.

Mixed Media…

Mixed Media is artwork that contains more than one medium in it. For example: monotype and pastel; monoprint, pastel and watercolor; etc.

Chine Colle is a French term meaning “Chinese paste”. It is a collage that has gone through a press. In my pieces the collaged artwork has gone through the press and now is a monotype & chine colle.

Collage is applying different papers, elements, onto a piece with glue. In my work when porous papers have wet glue on them, they cannot go through the press without destroying the piece. These pieces are monotypes & collage.
